Frequently Asked Questions

New to Highland dance? You are in good company. Here are answers to the questions we hear most often from prospective dancers and parents.

Who can take Highland dance classes?

Just about anyone! We teach children, teens, and adults. Our youngest dancers typically start around age four or five, but there is genuinely no upper age limit — many adults take up Highland dance for fitness, heritage, or the sheer joy of it. You do not need Scottish ancestry, prior dance experience, or any special athleticism to begin. All you need is curiosity and a willingness to try.

Do I need experience to start?

Not at all. Most of our dancers begin as complete beginners. When a new student joins, we welcome them straight into an appropriate class and add an extra teacher or advanced student to help them catch up comfortably. You will learn within the encouraging energy of a real class while still receiving individual attention.

What should I wear to my first class?

For a first class, comfortable athletic clothing you can move in and a pair of soft shoes or bare feet are perfectly fine. As dancers progress, they typically move into proper Highland dance shoes (ghillies) and, eventually, traditional dance attire for performances and competition. We are happy to advise on what to buy and when — there is no need to invest in anything specialized to get started.

Is Highland dance good exercise?

Absolutely. Highland dance is a genuine athletic discipline that builds strength, flexibility, balance, stamina, and coordination. It is also wonderful for focus, discipline, and confidence. National health authorities such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention emphasize the lifelong benefits of regular vigorous activity, and dance is one of the most joyful ways to get it.

Do I have to compete?

Never. Many of our dancers dance purely for fun, fitness, and the love of the tradition. Competition is available for those who want it — and we prepare competitors thoroughly — but it is entirely optional. As we like to say, learn for the fun of it, or become a champion. Both paths are welcome here.

How do classes work — in person or virtual?

We offer both. Many of our all-levels classes run in the studio and virtually at the same time, so dancers can keep training while traveling or during bad weather. Younger beginner classes are generally in person to give new dancers hands-on guidance.

How do I join?

Simply get in touch and we will recommend the right class and arrange a visit. Browse our class programs and schedule first if you would like a sense of what we offer. We cannot wait to welcome you to the floor.
